What is intra cytoplasmic sperm injection treatment?

Generally, in the conventional fertilization process, fertilization of the egg occurs when a sperm attaches with the egg and penetrates through the outer layer. However, in some cases where the sperm fails to penetrate the egg the intra cytoplasmic sperm treatment can be done along with IVF treatment to achieve pregnancy. This type of treatment is most suitable for couple having severe male infertility issues. In ICSI treatment, the sperm cell is directly injected into the cytoplasm of the egg, thus enabling egg fertilization and formation of the embryo that further helps a couple conceive.

How is intra cytoplasmic sperm injection and IVF treatment different?

In vitro fertilization can be done in two ways i.e. traditional method and ICSI method. The traditional process usually involves collecting more than 20,000 sperms and placing it in a petri dish along with the egg to achieve fertilization. The sperm then penetrates, entering the cytoplasm of the egg. On the other hand, the ICSI procedure generally involves injecting the sperm directly in the cytoplasm of the egg using a micropipette. By both the ways, fertilization of the egg is possible that further helps one achieve pregnancy.

When is intra cytoplasmic sperm injection treatment beneficial?

This type of treatment is beneficial in the below cases:

  • Low sperm count that prevents successful IVF
  • Low sperm motility
  • Inability of the sperm to penetrate the egg
  • Previous failure of traditional IVF treatment
  • Unexplained fertility

Procedure of intra cytoplasmic sperm injection

A skilled embryologist carries out Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection process, which generally involves the following:

Sperm retrieval:  Sperm is collected from the male partner through normal ejaculation process or by microsurgical process. The microsurgical process involves extraction of the sperm directly from the testicles using a tiny needle.

Egg collection: To increase the production of eggs, women have to consume fertility medications. The eggs are retrieved through the process of vaginal ultrasound wherein the women is administered with anesthesia.

Steps involved in intra cytoplasmic sperm injection process:

  • Sperm is retrieved in a pipette i.e. a dispenser
  • Using a thin needle, the sperm is picked
  • The needle is then used to insert the sperm in the cytoplasm of the egg
  • The needle is then removed
  • Eggs are checked for fertilization
  • The ICSI procedure is complete the time the eggs are fertilized. The further step involves transferring the embryo in the uterus for implantation. Pregnancy test has to be done after two to three weeks.  Blood test and ultrasound is done to confirm the pregnancy.
